3D mouse for exocad: setting up a SpaceMouse for dental CAD

What a 3D mouse for exocad changes in daily dental CAD work, how to set up a SpaceMouse driver and buttons, and free ready-made profiles to download.

Designers who spend the whole day in exocad often end up with two pointing devices on the desk: a normal mouse for the tools and a 3D mouse for moving the model. This post explains what a 3D mouse for exocad changes in practice, how I set up a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse for dental CAD, and where to download the profiles I use.

What a 3D mouse does in dental CAD

A 3D mouse such as the 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse has a pressure-sensitive cap that reads movement in six directions. Pushing, pulling, tilting or twisting the cap rotates, pans and zooms the scene at the same time. exocad DentalCAD supports these devices for navigation, and the buttons on the device can trigger commands.

With a normal mouse alone, one hand does two jobs. You rotate the view with the right button, stop, pick a tool, apply it, then rotate again to check the result. With a 3D mouse the left hand keeps the model turning while the right hand works with the tool, so you can follow a margin line or watch a contact point while you edit it.

Where it saves time

On a single crown the difference is small. It grows with every case that needs constant changes of view, such as bars, full-arch bridges, dentures and splints. Over a working day it also removes a large number of right-click drags, and most technicians notice that first in the wrist and shoulder.

The buttons add a second advantage. Stored views (occlusal, buccal, lingual) and a few frequent commands on the device mean fewer trips to the toolbar.

How to set up a SpaceMouse for exocad

  1. Install the official 3Dconnexion driver from the manufacturer’s website, then start exocad with the device connected.
  2. Lower the speed in the driver settings for the first days. Beginners tend to overshoot, and a slower setting makes the movement predictable.
  3. Disable any axis that gets in the way. Many designers turn off one rotation axis at the start and enable it again later.
  4. Map the buttons to actions you repeat on every case, starting with standard views and two or three commands. Add more when you notice a repeated action.
  5. Keep using the normal mouse for tools, brushes and control points. The 3D mouse handles navigation.

Expect the first day to feel slower than usual. After a few days of normal work the movement becomes automatic.

Choosing a model

A model with a handful of programmable buttons is enough for most technicians. The basic two-button model works but leaves little room for shortcuts, while the largest models add keys that many users never map. If you already trigger commands from a Stream Deck, a smaller 3D mouse is usually sufficient (see Stream Deck for exocad).

Free profiles for exocad and Zirkonzahn

My 3Dconnexion settings and Stream Deck profiles for exocad and Zirkonzahn are free on the download page. Import them, then move the buttons around until they match your own way of working. The exocad keyboard shortcuts list helps you decide which commands deserve a button.

A 3D mouse cannot compensate for a workstation that stutters when you rotate a full-arch case. If navigation still feels heavy with the device installed, check the graphics card first. The exocad hardware requirements guide explains what to look at.

Frequently asked questions

Does exocad support 3D mice?

Yes. exocad DentalCAD supports 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse devices for navigating the scene, and the buttons on the device can be mapped to commands.

Which SpaceMouse model is best for dental CAD?

A model with a few programmable buttons suits most technicians. The basic model leaves little room for shortcuts, and the largest models have more keys than most designers ever map.

How long does it take to get used to a 3D mouse?

Usually a few days of normal work. Use it with your non-dominant hand for navigation and keep the normal mouse for tools and control points.
