The odontotecnico diploma
The path starts in upper secondary school with the five-year professional course in dental technology. In the current system the track is called “Arti ausiliarie delle professioni sanitarie: odontotecnico”. It covers dental anatomy, gnathology, materials and laboratory techniques, and more schools now include CAD/CAM.
Adults who hold a different diploma can reach the qualification through the routes set by the Ministry. These may include preliminary tests on the subjects of the final years of the course.
The state qualification exam
The diploma alone does not allow you to practice independently. You also need to pass the qualification exam (esame di abilitazione).
According to the Ministry of Education and Merit, the exam consists of a written test, a practical test and an oral interview. The minimum passing score is 60 out of 100, and part of the credits comes from the candidate’s school path. The lab also keeps technical documentation, traceability records and post-market surveillance in proportion to its size.

A technician who cannot work with scans and CAD software has fewer options today, both inside labs and outside them.
