Dentbird Crown review: AI crown design for labs and clinics
A dental CAD designer reviews Dentbird Crown, the browser-based AI crown design tool: where it saves time, where it falls short, and how to use it safely.
Dentbird Crown is a browser-based dental CAD from Imagoworks that uses AI to generate crown designs from scan data. I tried it when AI crown design was still new. Today the questions I get from labs and clinics are more practical: which cases can go through it, and what changes in the workflow. This review answers both from the point of view of a designer who checks files before they go to production.
What Dentbird Crown is
Dentbird Crown runs in a web browser, so nothing has to be installed. You upload the scan data and the AI proposes a crown fitted to the preparation in a few clicks. Imagoworks has added features around it, such as batch processing of many crowns at once and a cloud space for sharing data, and it announced an integration with Shining 3D Dental Cloud. Plans and pricing have changed over time, so check the current offer on dentbird.com.
Where AI crown design saves time
The best results come on routine posterior single units with a clean preparation, a clear margin and a good bite scan. On those cases the first proposal is often close to usable, and editing a reasonable shape is faster than starting from a library tooth.
Clinics without a CAD workstation get a design tool that needs only a browser. Batch processing is useful when many simple crowns arrive together.
Where a designer is still needed
The AI works with what the scan shows. When the margin is noisy or partly covered, someone has to decide whether to draw it, estimate it or ask for a rescan, and that decision determines the fit.
Occlusion is the second limit. Static contacts on the scanned bite are one thing. Guidance, movement and articulator data are another, and they matter on anterior teeth, on several units and whenever the occlusal scheme changes.
Anterior aesthetics depend on proportions, surface texture and the rest of the smile, which an average shape does not capture. Implant restorations need the right library, screw channel, emergence profile and component. Bridges, bars and dentures involve many elements that interact, and a one-click proposal covers only a small part of that work.
Someone also has to verify thickness, margins and contacts before production and take responsibility for the file.
Using Dentbird without surprises
- Treat every output as a proposal. Inspect margin, contacts and minimum thickness before export.
- Decide in advance which cases go to AI, for example posterior single units with good scans in standard materials, and send the rest to a designer.
- Check where patient data is stored and processed, and whether that fits your privacy obligations.
- Test the export with your milling or printing workflow before the first real case.
What AI changes for CAD designers
AI already takes over part of the repetitive work, as the design wizards in exocad and 3Shape did years ago. What remains is the work AI handles poorly: difficult scans, implants, aesthetics, full-arch cases and responsibility for a production-ready file. For a lab, a sensible split is automation for volume on simple units and human design time on the cases where a mistake means a remake.

Frequently asked questions
What is Dentbird Crown?
A browser-based dental CAD by Imagoworks that uses AI to generate crown designs from scan data in a few clicks, without installing software.
Can AI replace a dental CAD designer?
On simple single units it can produce a usable first proposal. Complex cases, implants, aesthetics, dynamic occlusion and responsibility for the final file still need a trained designer.
Is Dentbird free?
Plans and pricing have changed over time. Check the current offer on dentbird.com before relying on it for production.
Does Dentbird work with intraoral scanner clouds?
Imagoworks announced an integration with Shining 3D Dental Cloud. With other scanners you upload the exported scan files.
