AI in dental CAD design today: what really works

AI in dental CAD design today: what exocad and 3Shape Automate offer, where AI proposals save time, where a technician is still needed and how to test it.

Artificial intelligence is now inside the dental CAD software labs use every day, and every release promises more automation. For a lab owner the useful question is narrower: which tasks AI handles well today, and which still need a technician. This post looks at AI in dental CAD design as it stands in 2026, based on what the software makers publish and on how I use it on real cases.

What the main CAD makers offer

exocad released DentalCAD 3.3 Chemnitz in October 2025. According to exocad, it brought AI-powered design for multiple units, covering up to three adjacent posterior crowns or posterior bridges of up to three units, and AI automation to speed up occlusal splint design. exocad states that the AI services require my.exocad integration and exocad Credits, and are available to users in the EU and the USA.

3Shape offers Automate, an AI design service for labs and clinics. According to 3Shape, it designs crowns, inlays and onlays, bridges, copings, night guards and simple and forming models, and users of Dental System 2021 or newer can edit the crown designs they receive. Other tools, such as the browser-based crown generator reviewed in Dentbird Crown review, focus on single units.

Where AI saves time

The gains are clearest on standard indications with good scans: posterior single crowns, short posterior bridges and splints. An AI proposal gives a reasonable anatomy in seconds, and the technician spends the time on checking instead of shaping. For a lab with many simple units, that changes the daily rhythm.

AI also helps with consistency. Proposals follow the same logic every time, which reduces differences between technicians on routine work.

Where a technician is still needed

AI proposals depend on the input. A scan with a missing margin, a wrong bite or a distorted area produces a confident proposal that is wrong. The technician still checks the margin line, contacts, occlusion and minimum thickness for the material, as in any case.

Implant work, full-arch cases, aesthetic anterior work, cases with unusual anatomy and anything outside the indications the AI was trained for still need a designer. So does the decision about whether a case fits the AI at all. Labs that send everything through AI without checks move the error from the design to the remake.

How to test AI in your lab

Start with one indication, such as posterior single crowns, and run AI proposals in parallel with the usual workflow for a few weeks. Measure the correction time, the remake rate and the cost per case, including credits or per-design fees. Then decide indication by indication. The habits that make any CAD faster, AI or not, are in 5 exocad mistakes that slow down your workflow, and what AI changes for the profession is discussed in how to become a dental CAD designer.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI design crowns without a technician?

AI tools produce design proposals for standard indications, such as posterior crowns and short bridges, that are often usable with small corrections. A technician still checks margins, contacts, occlusion, thickness and the material limits before the design goes to production.

What AI features does exocad have?

With DentalCAD 3.3 Chemnitz, exocad introduced AI-powered design for multiple units, for up to three adjacent posterior crowns or posterior bridges of up to three units, and AI automation for occlusal splints. According to exocad, the AI services require my.exocad integration and exocad Credits and are available in the EU and the USA.

Will AI replace dental CAD designers?

AI moves the work from shaping simple teeth to checking, correcting and handling the cases AI does not cover, such as implants, full-arch work, aesthetics and difficult scans. Designers who know the clinical side and the materials remain needed for that part.
